    The catalogue for this exhibition at the Virginia Historical Society, Septem Janu , of items included in the bequest to the historical society of a large portion of Mellon’s personal library of rare books, maps, manuscripts, and drawings relating to the history of the Americas in general and Virginia in particular. Parker, who began collecting in , preceded Cotton in his collecting by a generation. The Sir Thomas Phillipps library, though formed in the nineteenth century and dispersed, was many times larger than either Cotton's or Parker's libraries, and also needs to be considered for the designation.
